motor mount
Return to Discussionshas anyone else made a motor mount for their canoe. about a month ago i was at a antique store and found a brand new condition vintage trolling motor fromthe 70's/80's 2 speed 9 # thrust for my canoe. i use my canoe mainly for fishing , exploring and sunning and i like to paddle but sometime especially fishing i want to troll so you know a 9# thrust on a 15 ft canoe thats the most i will be doing so i've been looking at motor mounts and are they crazy or what $40.-$75. i looked up several easy designs and with wood and a couple dollars for bolts and nuts and a can of shellac . if interested google canoe motor mounts - very easy project.
For both trolling motor and 4 hp gas motor, I just used the normal transom mount of the motor itself and clamped to the side of the canoe. I used a block of wood on the inside where the clamp feet grip. Just ran the motor sideways on it's own mount and that worked perfectly.
that's a good point i've bent several trolling motor shaft mounted to the front of my fishing boat that did damage to the mount also the boat is heavyer duty so yes i can expect that the canoe may not fair as well. one of the lakes i fish has a 10 hp limit on boat motor but always neat to watch a canoe coming up a channel with the bow high out of the water with a 5 or 10 hp on the back. i imagine my little 9# thrust will be lucky to push me along , been high 90f to darn hot to fish.
