if you have both
Return to Discussionswonder if anyone else has both a canoe and kayak ? ive had my old town vapor 4-5 years now and love it, it tracks really good and scoots along and even though i use it on lakes and pretty calm rivers i wanted a canoe too as i don't really enjoy fishing from the yak but i guess when you go out on a adventure what makes you decide which one to take. for me i like to explore as much as i do fish so if im going to putter around or going someplace new i'll take the yak if just fishing it the canoe .
I have a small fat canoe which I took to our place in NC last summer so don't know the name of it. My dad bought it many years ago. I do know that when my 6'3 270 lb son and I went in it it was very unstable. Every time he moved it felt like we were going to tip over.
Looking forward to using it some this summer with my wife. Maybe finding some private coves in the lake for a skinny dip.
Does anyone use a motor on theirs? Like a trolling motor. Was thinking about fashioning one onto it. It doesn't have a square back so it's not designed for that. Any thoughts?

Bass Pro shops sells a trolling motor mount for a conventional (not square stern) canoe. It sets the motor off to the side. $75.You could fabricate something yourself for less cost , I'm sure.
i built a trolling motor bracket out of 2x3 ,i found the plans on line so simple and cheaper than $40.- $75. and you can really create it to your liking. just need a circular or cut off saw - guess a handsaw if more energy than me and a drill. i usually solo so i spin my canoe around and the front becomes the back so my mount is cut to fit behind the front seat so if i take another person with me i'd have to make another mount for my canoe. i was lucky on the trolling motor i bought at a antique store for $35. it's brand new old sears ( never used) but only 9# thrust which should be enough to move me around.just google how to make a trolling motor mount for canoes and you will see tons of ideas you can piece together for a few bucks. i think the bolts cost more than the wood - maybe total cost $5.-$8. i'll try to post a picture.
I have both, but I almost always use the canoe. It's a 5 metre kevlar that fits three, and I tend to get on the water when I go camping with others. That means the kayak doesn't get much use. I find that for multi-day trips kayaks just don't cut it for me.

Only kayak is real thing. We have Prijon Kodiak for wife and seak for me. Kanu is ok but we prefer kayak in the flat river, lake or the sea.
Its not a one size fits all thing for sure. Even within the individual boats there are numerous types of kayaks and canoes for specific purposes and I want at least one of each lol.
it is amazing how popular kayaking has become and how many different brands there are now, and with that you can get a new kayak for less than $200. to thousands. when i go to the lake it is amazing how many you see out there now.
