Apple Dumplings!
Return to DiscussionsApple Dumpling recipes
The only thingI really do differently whenI make these is,I don't just use butter, sugar and cinnamon in the center of my apples,I also add brown sugar, nutmeg, and cloves... andI fill them to overflowing before wrapping the dough around them. Also, some people prefer to make their apple dumplings without the extra syrup added, but the syrup does tend to make them even more gooey and tender and yummy, so it's up to you. If you have any questions, ask! Also, if you have a pie crust recipe you particularly like, use that instead of the one here. I also know some people who use buttermilk biscuit dough, either homemade or store bought, rather than traditional pie crust, it just depends on your preference. Either way,I guarantee you'll never look at a plain old apple, or a boiled dumpling, the same way ever again!
If you like caramel, these are very good.

~ In a small bowl, combine 1 egg, water and vinegar, gradually add to crumb mixture, tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball. Divide into seven portions. crumb
~ On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into a 7-inch square. Place an apple on each pastry square; place 1 tablespoon butter in the center of each. Combine cinnamon and remaining sugar; sprinkle over apples.
~ Bring up corners of pastry to center; pinch edges to seal. Beat remaining egg; brush over pastry. Place in a greased 13-inch x 9- inch baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
~ Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, combine the sauce ingredients. Bring to a boil; cook and stir until smooth and blended. Pour over apples.
~ Bake 35-40 minutes longer or until apples are tender and pastry is golden brown, basting occasionally with sauce. Serve warm. May be served with vanilla ice cream or milk over the top.
If you don't like caramel, you can use a syrup of 1 stick of butter, 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. Prepare and use as you would the caramel sauce.
I also found this recipe, which looks amazing! I'm gonna have to try it.

Anyway... I hope you get to try these, especially the traditional apple dumplings, and I hope you like them. Personally, if I was making them for you I probably wouldn't do the caramel sauce, but I know other people who swear by it, so it's all a matter of taste. Enjoy! :)
