Colorado Mountain Hiking

Return to DiscussionsWell, plan on Thursday, June 21, wherever you manage it. Summer Solstice. Most think if it as the first day of summer. I think of it as the day when the Earth is spinning perpendicularly to the sun, so the sun is coming straight down on the equator. I celebrate solstice and equinox for those reasons, not because it "marks" the changing of the seasons.
I plan on hiking somewhere on that day, most likely somewhere in the foothills West of Boulder. I have not figured out where I can do that yet. I have no interest in being seen by textiles. That's where I'm coming from.
Dream Canyon is more of a sit/lie in the sun kinda place. Lots of rock climbers on the canyon walls and along the river. A hike in there is not that easy to accomplish there without an audience. Look for National Forest. Try find pullouts or dispersed camping areas and either camp and hike, or just park there and hike. Avoid private property holdings within the National Forest. I'm still searching for places.
I've been in Dream Canyon, but it used to be a little less populated. It's definitely beautiful.
