fat dogs
Return to Discussionsmy dogs are fat and i don't know why. i go to a school in a diffrent state and my dogs are with my mother. i have 2 labs ones an english lab and the other is american. i know the english lab has a stocker build then the american but there both overweight. the dogs get walked 2 miles at a time twice a week. as far as i know the don't get over fed the get 1.5 cups of food twice a day. there still overweight. any ideas?
WALK and DIET !! You have to keep a Lab lean and know that they will eat just about anything they find or is given. Try out a new all natural diet like Blue ( you can add roasted plain chicken and veggies to make it more appealing to them) and get them out for more walks like a hour a day each day. Even if you have to hire a local kid to take them for walks if your Mom cannot. I've done that many times here when needed and my Goldie has always stayed in the 70 lb range. Good Luck and lets us knoiw if they trim up.

As with every living thing, fat is built on food intake vs energy expended. If you wish the dogs to lose weight, you must either exercise them more or feed them less. And no snacks.
Hello all. Our Dalmatian was gaining weight and I took him for walks and even took him out for bike rides (me on the bike LOL). And after 4 months ever day taking him out, he only lost 5lbs and did not have much energy. I took him in to the vet and had him get a test for hypothyroidism and found out that is was very low. I guess this is common in dogs that have been fixed. So now he is on Soloxine. Plus when he goes on Soloxine he will have to take it for the rest of his life. So far he has lost weight and has a lot more energy. He now wants to run for at least a1 miles and jogs for about 1 mile. He is now making me work out more which is not a bad thing. So take a look on the internet on hypothyroidism in dogs and hope this helps some.
you need to exercise them more and cut back on their fat intake.I own a dogsled tour company, i tend to 10 dogs regularly,Check the fat content of the food you are feeding them and get the lowest as possible, that combined with exercise will cut their weight done quickly
Try this, first talk to your vet get them check, first thing to understand is if they really are over weight or bloated because they may be ill. Second take a look and examine their food. Is it standardised or are they being feed different types of meals. Third and very important is weigh all meals 800 grams per dog is more than enough. Fourth plenty of clean fresh water available to them 24/7. Do not suddenly increase their exercise routine. Very gradually once the vet has ensured their health do you engage them in activity.
Remember dogs are like humans when they diet it is better slowly but surly as it is more likely to keep their weight down and add the tip bits to the total amount of food you give them for the day. In our dogs case after cutting back total food intake 10% she stopped putting weight on and after 6 months staying the same we cut her back another 10% of total food for her to start loosing weight and it was 4 years to get her down to the correct weight and she wasn't really over weight in the first case.
Remember many dogs do suffer from wheat allergies as well.
