Hurricane Sandy

Return to Discussions

I saw a photo on Facebook that showed the bridge entering Sandy Hook. All it showed was the arch of the bridge. That photo showed Sandy Hook totally submerged. Another photo showed the neighboring town Sea Bright flooded. No more beach dates in 2012. We can only hope for next year.

RE: Hurricane Sandy

It's sad. The entire Jersey shore was devastated. We can only hope things will be back up & running in 6 months or so.

I saw a picture of the road going into the Hook and it was all upended. It will take a while for it to get fixed because I think that won't be the highest priority to get fixed. just don't know....

RE: Hurricane Sandy

It's really upsetting as this place is a wonderful retreat from the everyday burdens we face. I lost count on how many days I would just hop in the car on a nice day and drive 90 min just to sit and relax in a way that I feel the most free. The only small consolation is that there will be 6-7 months until it's time to think about returning. Let's hope the National Park Service gets to it in time.

RE: Hurricane Sandy

There were pics on Facebook taken by the Park Rangers and it is in bad shape. There was some damage to the sewage plant which will also have an effect on if there is an opening next year. But really - are you all that self centered that having Gunnison open is your primary concern right now??

Baretraveler, could you please post the URL link for those Facebook photos that the Park Rangers took. I have Facebook. I tried a search while in Facebook and didn't find the photos you saw. The Facebook search turned up a number of options, but they all were businesses or fair weather publicity.

In answer to Baretraveler's question, yes I could get along Gunnison Beach. However, I think I will send an email to AANR, to see whether they would push for a priority on getting that sewerage plant back into service, so that the most popular clothing optional beach on the east coast can open during 2013.

Don't count on Gunnison Beach being open during 2013.

RE: Hurricane Sandy

I have seen pics of the restroom and snack bar area of Gunnison Beach and the new boardwalk that was put in the other year leading to the beach is laying in pieces by the showers. Parts of the storage building close to the path to the beach is damage. Gunnison Road was under water by the snack bar and also the parking lot was under water. Fort Hancock sustain damage from Sandy. Also the entrance to Sandy Hook by the new bridge was badly torn up. The news from Asbury Park had those pics. We'll be lucky if Gunnison will be open by July.

Sandy Hook is a Federal Park, should have more resources available than stste beaches will. If they can get the bathrooms up and running, beaches should be open next summer...
But the Federal government has the problem of a deficit. Don't count on Gunnison Beach open, especially with Republicans controlling the House of Representatives. Democrats don't like deficit spending either.
