Does anyone out there know the island and can recommend places to visit and explore?
Well I live in Thailand and tend to avoid Phuket because it is super touristy end thus expensive. I'd avoid the mass-touristy beaches of Patong, Kata and Karon. Having said that, there are quieter and nicer beaches such as Surin and Nai Harn. I just recently spent a few days at Nai Harn beach, that was quite nice and quiet. But maybe too quiet for the first-timer? No "town" or meaningful shopping there, for example. It depends on what you like. You can take day trips to neighboring small (some tiny) islands, some of which are stunningly beautiful such as Koh Mai Thon ("koh" menas "island" in Thai), which is not visited by western tourists much at all. It's a bit inland, so you'd need transport if you want to go to a beach. Happens to be not that far from said Nai Harn beach. They would be able to advise of any secret nude beaches, if any.
