If you enjoy being naked and enjoy life doing things without clothes like a textile does wearing clothes like me, then you are a nudist, you can be a social nudist and attend activities with others or you can be what is often called a closet nudist , ie. Be nude on your own whether it be only at home or in secluded locations.
According to what I've read from others if you like to be nude you're still a nudist even when clothed. Ever heard the phrase "naked under your clothes?" It pretty much defines who/what a nudist is. It doesn't require validation by others as long as you're free as you can be when you can be.

It's a little bit like being a smoker. You enjoy the effect that
smoking has on you. It is not other people seeing you smoke that
makes you a smoker ... but smoking together with other smokers may
enhance the experience ...
BTW - I am not a smoker - but I am fully
addicted to being naked ... both alone and socially ...
You are a nudist if you engage in going without clothes whenever possible. It's that simple. It has nothing to do if someone sees your nakedness or not but most nudist have the desire to see other people naked and be to be seen naked.
Where and why do you you assume MOST nudist have the desire to see other people naked and to be seen naked. I can assure you there are many nudist that do not want to see or be seen by nude people.
My original question was prompted by the sentiment I read in many profiles that, if a person does not post pictures of themself, or go to nude resorts or belong to a club then they are some sort of false nudist. I myself follow the idea that if you prefer to go without clothes you are a nudist, alone or not. I also think that some nudists need to understand that openly being a nudist is not possible in some states and areas.
It's all to do with what you feel - what you think of yourself. I
was a potential nudist for most of my life, enjoying getting naked
when I could. But I didn't admit it to myself until about 5 years
ago. Then I became a nudist. It's about wanting to be naked and
being comfortable in my own skin. It's doing the things I would do
anyhow, but without any clothes. It's enjoying the freedom and
vulnerability of nudity. Does it matter if I'm on my own or with
others? No but it is taken to a much higher level when I'm
naked with other nudists.
And to be considered a nudist is about what others think of me.Frankly I don't really care, though everyone around me knows I'm a nudist (or at least claim to be).
