Waukegan North Beach
Return to DiscussionsHad another beautiful morning at the north end of Waukegan's North Beach on Saturday. It wasn't as hot as Sunday or the next few days, but that meant the water temp was close to the air temp, making it quite pleasant.
As I've mentioned before, the north end has no enforcement -- it's not part of the municipal beach, it's the former power plant property (not the Zion nuclear plant, it's the older one that's due for some coal ash pond remediation), but not really accessible from there, only from the beach to the south, or by boat.
I was the only person out there until 10:30, when 3 boats full of people showed up (and one of them went and fetched two more loads of people). They kept to their part of the beach, I kept to mine, but it cut down on skinny dipping.
Note that there is a $20 (!!!) fee for parking on weekends after 10AM. Get there early, or on a weekday, and it's free.
Usually I see the same 2-4 guys there. The vibe is friendly but not (ahem) intimate, which is a good thing. Who'll join me?
Went out there on 9/11 in the afternoon. It was a gorgeous day and there were 4 other guys out there. All laying in the sunbathing and enjoying the sounds of Lake Michigan. I stayed till the sun started going away so there werent many people left at the south end of the beach. I was chatting with one of guys there and since the sun was setting we both started back to the parking lot. I felt a little sun burn so I wore a t-shirt and no shorts and he went naked with just his backpack. We went along the beach till we came within a discreet distance of a man and woman couple packing their stuff up. Then we stopped for a second and put some clothes on then continued along the beach. We didnt seem to bother them. Overall a fantastic afternoon.
