Waukegan North Beach
Return to DiscussionsHad another beautiful morning at the north end of Waukegan's North Beach on Saturday. It wasn't as hot as Sunday or the next few days, but that meant the water temp was close to the air temp, making it quite pleasant.
As I've mentioned before, the north end has no enforcement -- it's not part of the municipal beach, it's the former power plant property (not the Zion nuclear plant, it's the older one that's due for some coal ash pond remediation), but not really accessible from there, only from the beach to the south, or by boat.
I was the only person out there until 10:30, when 3 boats full of people showed up (and one of them went and fetched two more loads of people). They kept to their part of the beach, I kept to mine, but it cut down on skinny dipping.
Note that there is a $20 (!!!) fee for parking on weekends after 10AM. Get there early, or on a weekday, and it's free.
Usually I see the same 2-4 guys there. The vibe is friendly but not (ahem) intimate, which is a good thing. Who'll join me?
Waukegan continues to be a joy this warm September. Very few people on the beach on a weekday, such that there was one nude guy hanging out with a swimsuit-clad woman a lot further south than usual. A woman jogger ran all the way up to the North end, waving "hi" at the few nude guys.
Come on out, the water is warm.
Another beautiful day on Waukegan North Beach. For most of the morning, it was myself, and a younger woman hiking that I talked to for a bit. She said she wasn't there to take advantage of the clothing optional area *today* but might in the future, she'd been to other beaches before. She'd hiked up to the far end, and there were birders there who claimed it was a "private beach" and she should leave. Yes, avoid disturbing the piping plovers, but don't lie about it.
Two down notes:
1) a little after 11 AM, the usual boat and waverunners showed up, making it a too crowded, noisy, and with kids. I moved further up the coast to avoid any issues.
2) Waukegan is now charging $20 starting at 9AM on weekends and holidays. The cop who was collecting the fee said he was surprised -- it used to be 11 -- but he'll take the overtime pay,. I almost bailed on it but I did enjoy the time I had there.
I left early afternoon after running out of water.
