Return to Discussionsback in the 80's i had a couple different sailboats that i enjoyed sailing on our local lake, my favorite days were during the middle of the lake when few boats were out. i always kept them in a slip so all i had to do was jump and go, once away from the dock the swimsuit usually came off for a full tan. soon the slip fees went up and other interest swayed me away but i miss those days and even though i am looking for another sailboat i now prefer a small boat even a sunfish would suit me. and you know as the cold weather comes the priices will slip, last night a 14 ft daysailer w/trailer was posted for $100. needless to say the owner said it was sold as fast as he posted it. i willl continue to look....
yes slips are nice, i have a 20 foot trailerable, but it takes 2 hours to set up, 2 houirs to take down. i am not a rich man, but our slips are 900 dollars a season ( in wisconsin, maybe, yes maybe 2 months) it is worth the money just to be able to jump in and go
my last sailboat was 18 foot kept it rigged on trailer and just had to put sails on andback it down to ramp lanch and go, if i go that large i will probably do the same. i really prefer something smaller now and would have no problem with a sunfish size boat.
I got tired of the 2 hours prepping the boat & 2 hours getting it ready for trailor mode, plus the ache of stepping the mast in my back. I got a larger boat that stays in the water, now if I don't wash it down, I can be sailing in 10-15 minutes, so I find I use the boat more for quick 2 - 3 hour sails and don't feel guilty. I know the cost of a slip is more than the storage yard, but the enjoyment out ways it.
for those with slips i don't blame you, my first sailboat i actually pulled it back and forth to the lake, alot of times i was by myself and set the mast and rig it, after a month or so i went slip looking. my first slip was callled the end cap or the end of the dock and back in the 80's i think it was about $60 or $70. a quarter what a deal and how great it was to just go and jump in, alot of times i was just go for the weekend and just stay at the dock and chill. but the slips price rapidly climbed. one weekend i was sailboat shopping in the 90's and ran across a man who had a sailboat dealership years ago that i had bought a boat from, he had a old chrysler 22 for sale $1000. buck great condition and a great boat, i was interested but knew it would need a slip so i went slip looking again but this time it wasn't $60. aquarter but $2000. a year paid in full wow have times changed no wonder the boat was such a great deal. so i left boat less and moved on to other interest. no a small daysailer will suit me.
well there are some great deals on 20 footers, there is a cal 20 in my area for $700. what a great deal and a great boat but most are fixed keel. i see a little daysailer 15 foot with trailer for $100. may check out. but still leaning toward a sunfish or maybe a captiva escape or some refer to it as a escape captiva. yes something to slide into the back of mypickup like when i take the kayak, spash and go. not in no hurry i'll know when i see it.
i was cruising the internet and came across the butterfly sailboat, kinda like a sunfish but a blunt bow a little larger cockpit and stays, i actually had one but was beyond repair and cut it up. i also like it because the deck seems large. still looking other than these and the phantom can anyone else think of any other small 12-14 foot daysailers.
