Yuuyaraq: The Way of the Human Being
Return to DiscussionsI read an interesting book, Yuuyaraq: The Way of the Human Being, by Harold Napoleon, published by Alaska Native Knowledge Network, copywright 1996. A very interesting book that explains why things are the way they are with Alaska Natives but could also be applicable to American Indians as well. Harold talks about the 1918 Flu Pandemic that swept the world, but also had a great impact on AK Natives. In another book, I remember reading how the Missionaries didn't speak any AK Native languages, and they lined up the survivors, men in one row, the women in another row, then went down the roll saying, "You marry him", "You marry her", etc... What the Missionaries didn't know was that they were "Marrying" brother with sister, or aunt, mother, cousin!!! The oldest and yougest were killed by the flu. The AK Natives lost their past, and their future at that time. The AK Natives carry the PTSD to this day. If you get a chance, read this book!!
