A bit farther south than Oak island, is Sunset Beach. If you go 1.5 miles west from the pier you are on the Bird Island Nature Reserve. While it isn't legal, people have been known to strip off with care taken to avoid the textiles. The area where most people hang out is past The Kindred Spirit Mailbox. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of Nicholas Sparks' new book we have a lot more visits to the area. But all is not lost, thongs and topless are legal on the reserve, but just go a couple of hundred yards past the the line, so the beach patrol won't hassle you. PM me for more info
