You Run Into People On The Trail
Return to DiscussionsSo, if you are hiking in your favorite spot and you come around a corner right in front of a mixed sex, textile, group of hikers, no kids. There is no chance of covering the vital areas. In your area what do you think the majority would be thinking:
A) Frickin pervert. We need to see if we have cell coverage so we can call the sheriff. They give you the evil eye and may be say something nasty.
B) Damn crazies, I wish they would do that some place we didnt have to see them. They frown and keep going.
C) To each their own, thats brave. They give you the thumbs up but mostly advert their eyes.
D) That looks like fun. They stop and talk to you about your naked hiking experience.
In my area I would like to think it would be D, but it is probably C. But it also depends on specific location and time of the year.
We live in an area where there are lots of hiking trails and lots of millennials! I suspect that they'd react like A and B, mostly. I'd like to think they'd react as C and D but not from my experience from listening to their banter about nakedness. Funny because they are usually the ones wearing the bare minimum around town or at the beach but have this crazy phobia about nudity! ;D
I hiked nude all over California and Colorado. When I passed someone on the trail, they simply ignored me and continued on as did I. Never had problems with Law Enforcement, especially in California where it is NOT illegal to be simply nude. My favorite places to nude hike were the San Mateo Canyon trail from the falls to Fisherman's camp and on towards Camp Pendelton; Nude hike on the Barker's Spur near the Palomar Observatory down to the beautiful four teired waterfalls; Nude hiking all around my property in Colorado on BLM and National Monument land. Alas ... I am now stuck in Ohio, a very anti-nude state. However, I am closing next week on my brand new house that is neighboring Cedar Trails Nudist Resort, so I will be able to hike naked from my property to theirs over a ridge, so I am looking forward to that.
If you do run into textiles, just smile, say "hi!" and continue on.
Don
I agree with Don. This year I have been actively hiking nude. I run into textiles all the time. Usually, I cover my groin with my hat. My thought is that if I have to deal with law enforcement, my attempt to cover up is proof that I have no lewd intent. Sometimes if I see only a guy I don't bother to cover up. In any case, I have only experienced two reactions. One reaction is: people just ignore me. The other reaction has been when people actually say something positive. In fact they sometimes want to take my picture with them. people don't seem to care. given enough time, I'm sure I will some day encounter a negative response. That is just life.
I hike nude regularly, with my partner, a few friends and with organised nudist walking groups. We've run into others around blind corners and had all of those possible reactions. Here in England it is not illegal to be nude in public like this, though it would make life easier for everyone if this was more widely known! We're not inclined to try to cover up because we feel that this might indicate that we consider it wrong to be nude like this, when we are within our rights. Overall we get a few who obviously don't approve, quite a few who comment positively in passing along the lines of ' that looks comfortable/wish we had the nerve to do it that way' and its not unusual at all for people to stop and engage in conversation, usually about our preference to be nude, in a good way.
So far it seems that it is assumed it will be A and B type people in the Midwest (Ohio) and the south (Carolinas), a mixed bag is the west may be leaning toward C and D type people, and more likely C and D type people in England (nice, I need to make that trip to England I've been planning). That is what one would expect for the most part. The only surprise is Andy's comment about millennials, but it I have to agree after thinking about it. The part about covering up or not is another topic, but a good one. It all comes down to what is indecent exposure, and that and that can be defined differently even at the county level. State law may be indifferent, but there could be a county or city ordnance that could bite you.
First of all, as a former California Peace Officer, if someone tries to cover themselves, then they can be placed under arrest for indecent exposure and it will most likely stick. Example, driving nude, and when you get pulled over by CHP, you cover up with a towel. You have more or less displayed behavior that what you had been doing is wrong. If the driver had simply told the CHP officer that they drove nude because they lived a clothing free lifestyle, the officer would let them go because no DA's in the State of California will prosecute on simple nudity. SO I would advise NOT covering up, or it can be interpreted as an admission of guilt to a lewd act.
Second, Andy, you really need to check out that hike at Palomar!
Don
Hiking from the parking lot to a secluded nude beach in Florida it was an A when I ran into a young couple. This was before cell phones so they couldnt call the authorities. It was strange as they were wearing heavy dark clothes and long pants while walking through a hot Florida nature preserve. They looked like lost missionaries.
