To cover or not to cover?
Return to DiscussionsIve seen a few posts that recommend when being found nude hiking or driving it is best not to attempt to cover as this would be seen as an admission of guilt. I see covering up as a means of respecting textile folks who neither expected nor wanted to see a nude man when they set out to be in that place. I suppose it is situation dependent, but what do you think?
It is nice not to admit you are wrong when you aren't. And the choice to cover or not is not consistent between countries, states, counties, etc.... However, the biggest problem is that many places define indecent exposure by exposure of the parts not usually seen. More liberal places add intent to that. Was it you intent to expose yourself to people. If you go through the effort of covering, it is easier to say your intent was a naked walk and not to be seen. At a personal level, I don't want to force my nudity on someone that objects to seeing it.
Whether outdoors or inside, I take measures to not be seen nude by textiles. I dont care for a confrontation or the need to hire a lawyer. It has nothing to do with courtesy, as many textiles dont extend the same courtesy to me to be nude.
I would agree that you have to respect the fact that some people dont want to see nudity. The same way that I want people to respect that I want to be nude. So attempting to temporarily cover up, I think, is being considerate to other hikers. But I also think the trip is not to apologize. Then that seems like you know you were doing something wrong. So a quick hand cover and a Hi how ya doing would cover it. Then see how they react and respond accordingly. Only happened to me once. I did the hand cover and he giggled and said enjoy the hike. Then kept moving. So I kept moving. So now he has a great story to tell.
When hiking naked I carry a wrap or short kilt which I can put on quickly if I encounter other hikers and when passing dwellings. It is perfectly legal to hike naked here in the UK and in many other countries where I have been. But, like others, I see no point in upsetting those who I encounter on the way. They know I'm hiking naked because they saw me at the same time as I saw them - hopefully in the middle distance. I'm not admitting any guilt. I'm just not flaunting my naked body as we draw close to each other.
In my Nude Hiking group, we occasionally come across textiles. On one hike very suddenly a jogger appeared. Most don't care, and some respond with a greeting. Some have just pretended we don't exist. Recently one woman with her nude dog, commented, on the number of hikers in the group (it was 34). Depending on the situation, we keep going, cover up or just sit as a group.
On one walk through the Royal National Park, not only did we have a jogger pass through and say hello, we also had a woman who stopped and had a chat with us. She was a nurse, and just enjoying the outdoors. Afterwards we all went on our own way.
