The Independence was just getting ready to be commissioned on the other side of the pier when I was part of the decommissioning crew aboard the USS LEYTE CVS-32 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1958. I went from the Leyte to the USS Otterstetter DER-244 and old WWII destroyer escort radar picket ship.
