Nudity In Film
The hope of this group is to create an extensive film library that showcases nudity in a positive and non-sexual way.
Respect for an actor
Return to DiscussionsI don't know about the rest of you, but i have a level of respect for an actor or actress who decides to bare all for a movie. I am not talking porn films but I am referring to movies where the setting requires nudity for it to make sense. A shower scene, a prison strip search scene, a medical setting. It might only be seconds on the screen that we see the actor in the buff, but that often means many takes and extended nude time
with a film crew around. I just rewatched 28 Days Later where the actor Irish actor Cillian Murphy is introduced to us lying hooked up to tubes and monitors flat on his back and bare head to toe. The initial camera angle is positioned directly above him leaving him fully exposed. What movie comes to mind to you where the actors bared all for the sake of a realistic storyline.?
I totally agree. Most nudity in film is there to titillate or at least get enough attention to sell tickets. The recent growth of full frontal male nudity, though bringing some needed equality and fairness to film, is still not really always fair as many male actors are wearing prosthetic penises. When have female actors worn prosthetic breasts? Maybe they have and I and havent heard but I wonder if protecting male modesty or size image still shows we are a long way from normalizing nudity.
Another one that comes to mind is Midsommar (2019). According to IMDB, after the sex scene, Christian was supposed to run out in the robe he entered in but the actor suggested he run outside nude to appear more vulnerable.
Yes I read an interview with the actor about his extended nude scenes in the movie. He felt he should be as vulnerable as any female is while nude
Richard Gere in American Gigolo. Apparently, the famous nude scene was unscripted, he decided that it would make more sense for the character to be nude, so he was.
After I posted, I read that John Travolta and Christopher Reeves were both offered the part. I wonder if they would have done the same thing,
Since most men are actually quite average down there, I would daresay most actors are too. And probably don't want to put it out there for that reason.
I remember Bernadette Peters once said she didn't want to do a nude scene because then the convo would turn toward her breasts rather than the movie.
Likewise, an actor takes his clothes off and it becomes about his penis.
It seems most of the guys who have done it have been more endowed, which is why you know they do it.
If they were average or smaller they wouldn't want that convo going around.
And being that the penis is the sex organ on a male, and is plain to see, I can see why men would be sensitive to it.
