Nudity In Film
The hope of this group is to create an extensive film library that showcases nudity in a positive and non-sexual way.
Fabulous Kate Winslet
Return to DiscussionsI have always admired Ms. Winslet's talents. She has always deep dived into challenging and sometimes controversial roles. And, unlike some prominent actors, she has played nude scenes when they are integral to the role and storyline; including such films as THE READER and HOLY SMOKE.
What is your favorite Kate Winslet film? Mine: ENIGMA (2001) "During the heart of World War II, in March of 1943, cryptoanalysts at Britain's code-breaking center have discovered to their horror that Nazi U-boats have changed their Enigma Code."
Probably Holy Smoke. Her nude scene in it is so raw and poignant that's is pretty much unforgettable. But her nudity is not the only thing that made this movie great: it is a very affecting study on cults and the "deprogramming process." Not to mention a powerful performance by Harvey Keitel; whose life is changed forever after meeting Kate.
On a side note: the "peeing" sequence was actual done by Kate; but the director didn't like the way it came out (it dribbled down her leg) so he reshot it with a saline drip attached.

Absolutely correct on many points! The scene you described reflects Kate's desire to inject realism into a scene; or at least make the attempt with gusto. As you stated, the saline bag was eventually used. I do recall the scene and overall, it was a powerful performance by Winslet & Keitel. Thank you for the supplemental post!
