Snap shot or photograph?
Every once in a while a quick snapshot turns into an award winning photograph but that is pure dumb luck. For consistant pictures which are a step above the snapshot quality attention to detail is important. Watch for proper lighting, distracting backgrounds and, of course, your models pose. Everything must come together at once to create a real photograph.

good tip, but sometimes when your subject is like the furyguy i photographedin the other thread you may only get 1 or 2 of the 3. sometimes you do get lucky and you get the right pose when the lighting is right.
By putting yourself in a good position and choosing the proper focal length for your picture you planned ahead to get a really nice photograph. All you had to do was wait for your furry friend to co-operate. As you take more and more photos and critique yourself, always looking for a way to make a photo better, the planning will become automatic. Photographing humans gives you more control. Dont be afraid to direct. A photographer that directs subjects in a firm but friendly manner gains respect as one who knows what they are doing.
quite a few of my photographs are taken thru my back window and are often spur of the moment shots when i happen to walk into the room and see something worthwhile to shoot. i had a great shot lined up this spring where a squirrelwas sitting on a limb with an orange he had found. while i was getting the shot set up(focus,shutter speed, etc.) the clutz dropped it. nothhing to do but laugh at the situation. the squirell in the picture was on my patio chair and i shot it from 6 - 12 inches away. i guess having clean windows has its perks.
