Making privacy in the city
Return to DiscussionsSince I purchased my home in the suburbs, I've planted a complete privacy screening with trees and shrubs. Only problem I have now is watching out for police helicopters that like to buz around on occasion. I keep a towel handy to cover up if they fly over too close. Hopefully in the very near future I will relocate to a rural area for more privacy, less enclosure of my property, and a better feeling of freedom where I'm at.
I prefer not to have to hide myself on my own property from prying eyes!

Most law enforcement departments that have cameras or helicopters have written policies that bring harsh punishments for mis-using or observing things around private residences unless its part of an investigation. Most officers know they would be fired for taking a pic or even talking about it to other officers.
A South Yorkshire Police officer has been fired and sent to jail for doing the above from a 1000 feet up. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-40863585

My guess wold be that the police have more important things to worry about that catching a glimpse of a naked female breast or butt. Criminals. Traffic. Power lines, etc., etc., etc.
And yes, I would imagine they would also have specific guidelines for flying over private property.
Just look up at the helicopter. Can you see anyone inside? If they were nude could you tell? If you can't see them clearly then they can't see you.
Now drone...that's another story. One that might involve the firing of a net.
Every home we've purchased was in the burbs. I would prefer to live further away and not in a tract home but ... I didn't get my choice. ;-)
I was given the reigns to privatize our backyard and that I did! With only one next door neighbor, I planted 4 trees on that side of the yard and we have completed privacy. Around the other side and back wall, I planted dense growing shrubs and they are growing well and providing lots of privacy from adjacent two story homes but that does not stop us from enjoying our backyard nude ... all the time.
We also have a police helicopter that flies over quite often. We have military helicopters flying overhead a few times each day. They don't deter me from enjoying my naked time outside. We've had two drones near our backyard. One crash landed in our yard but it did not have a camera.
I/we just have to live our lives and not worry so much about others. We do, however, need to demand respect and our privacy just as we give these to others.
I truly understand where your coming from.... since my son lives with me and my girl I have to be careful... for I still sleep naked and at nite I walk to restroom naked and once in awhile relax in my front porch with cars driving by and even take a night walk and notice my neighbor's house has front camera now....or when I go to my garage i go naked as well and see a house two over and see them notice me walking thru naked tho they don't say a word when they see me... Even when I am clothed in front they pretend they didn't see a thing... Tho I know I have to be more cautious now
"It's not THAT big!" LOL... As I like to joke when being stealthy nude with friends who are worried about this sort of thing. Seriously a helicopter flying overhead, unless they are like 50' off the deck cannot tell what you're wearing (or not wearing in this case) or even care. Police helicopters just don't fly around for fun due to the operational costs. They are either looking for someone or something and using IR cameras to search for grow lights and other nefarious operations. The naked eye really can't detect that too much of interest otherwise. But yeah, unless youre swinging a 12" dong around like your own helicopter, no one can tell you're naked. Enjoy your urban privacy, because that's a rare treat.
I sitting here on my back patio at 9:00 and reading all the posts and thinking what a shame that us Americans, the land of the free, have to be so concerned about nudity. Here in ky, nudist resorts are illegal and I think it's Kansas where's it's illegal to be nude in your own house.! What s shame!

If it's against the law to be naked in your own home in Kansas, I'm breaking the law constantly. Actually, I've done quite a bit of research into Kansas laws and haven't found anything about this. While some towns and counties do have public nudity laws, most do not and the state law requires they prove intent to offend or sexually arouse the people who see you. So, I don't worry too much.
