Nude beaches
Return to DiscussionsThere are no official nude beaches in Texas. The only public nudity allowed is at Hippie Hollow State Park on Lake Travis. However, I hear there is a walk in area where it is tolerated near Corpus. We go each year to South Padre Island. There is an unofficial nude beach there. Go north from town to beach entry 6 and you can drive onto the beach. 4WD is suggested for the entry. We have not needed it past that. Go north again approximately 10 miles. They put mile markers up a year or two ago. This will put you into the next county and the local LE doesn't patrol the beach there. We have seen LE one time in the years we have been going. See our pics for the "spacecraft". That is also at the 10 mile point. Pay attention to the tide charts as when the tide is up some of the areas get very narrow. Most of us will park close enough to the water to allow traffic to pass dune side. When a vehicle comes by we will cover up, walk to the beach side of the vehicle or sit down to not be blatant about it. There is the occasional gawker or cat call but beyond that it is cool. Generally, don't park close to anyone out of politeness. We stay at least a 1/2 mile from others so we can all enjoy our own thing and have some privacy. We have friends we hang out with there and both of us carry binoculars to be on the safe side. They have non-nude friends they don't want knowing they are nudist and it tends to make the gawkers move on. We go in the fall after school has started back up and before the winter Texans arrive so the beach is pretty secluded. Also, the rates for the condos and motels have dropped dramatically. It happens to coincide with our anniversary so it's an annual thing. Will be glad to answer anything else about SPI. There might be another area near Galveston we have heard hints of. Maybe some other members can share info on that.
There is an area "near" Galveston that people use. It is closer to Crystal Beach. If you take the Ferry from Galveston, you stay straight. You will be going straight for many miles like you are going to Winnie. When the highway makes the turn, you keep going straight onto the unpaved road of the beach. There are sometime port-a-potties once you've gotten off the road. Most of the time you need a strong truck type vehicle to make the rest of this trek. You will need to venture down at least 4 miles from entry to be past the normal people. You can drive out more onto the sand to make the drive easier, but again watch for the tides. Most will go down further. Make sure to pull over far enough to allow people to get down the path. Some people will camp out there. The cops do patrol it at times, but you can see them coming to cover up. There are many people (mainly wanting to be gay men) who also go out there for sex, so you have to be aware that you might be watched or approached. If it is a time of year for mosquitoes, they are horrible out there no matter the time of day...even when windy. I never go barefoot out there. As a female, I would only go again with a tent or canopy. There was too much gawking with men driving by. It may be free (minus gas) but a resort is the better option to me.
The town of South Padre Island is in Cameron County. What you're doing by driving 10 miles up the beach to the "space capsule" is insuring that you're getting into Willacy County. The only access to this part of the beach is from the south unless you go by boat. Depending on where you stop you can see traffic coming for miles and have plenty of time to cover up or get dressed if you feel you need to do so.
Forgot to mention that Willacy County LE doesn't bother patrolling that area. We have never seen them. Guess they would show up if they received a call of some sort but they don't patrol the beach. In our numerous trips we have seen the Coast Guard 1 or 2 times flying by and they have better things to do than.
