Electrician needed for Electical switch to outside light Sheffield
Return to DiscussionsHi
I have in the living room a three way switch, with a defunct switch that used to operate wall lights. Could that be used for the outside light? Currently the outside light is controlled from the porch light switch which is not ideal.
Anyone able to undertake this task for me?

It needs a wire to be run from the switch to the light or (less ideal) from the switch to the switch in the porch (which would be blanked off). How easy it is depends on where the switch(es) and light are.
This may be more than you want, but I was in a similar
position.
I had a single wire going out to a PIR controlled security
light. This was controlled by one of a 3-switch cluster in
the hall.
As I was unable to get to any of the wiring inside the house, my
solution was to put a radio controlled relay outside. The
wires from the PIR were the supply to the relay, which then had
three separate outputs. One output was for the security
light.
The second output then went to the new coach light which we put on
the outside of the porch.
The last relay output went to two outdoor double power
sockets. While initially this sounds bad, running power
sockets off a lighting circuit, I get away with it because these
sockets are solely for running the Christmas lights.
The whole thing was done using:
an approved IPP enclosure,

Although if you want a wall mounted switch, you can look at
something like:

My porch is a part of a full home automation system using a Raspberry Pi, an RFXCOM transceiver, and Domoticz. I can highly recommend this, although I am moving over to more Z-Wave kit.
