Trip to Houston for the WNBR is in jeopardy

Return to Discussions

Uh oh, I may have to cancel the Houston trip. There is a tropical disturbance in the SW Gulf of Mexico that has a 50% chance of development in the next 48 hours and 70% in the next 7 days and is heading north along the west shore of the Gulf so it could be a tropical storm or hurricane by the end of next week depending on how fast it develops and the direction and speed it moves. I will have to monitor it. Of course if I do have to cancel that will mean I will have 4 days straight off unless I claim a shift, so a couple beach days could be in order.
This would be the 3rd year in a row that I planned on that ride and had to cancel.

Not looking good. It now has a 90% chance of development in 48 hours. The forecast track takes it through the western part of Louisiana about the time I would be driving through.

Why did you have to cancel the other 2 years. I vaguely remember you saying why at the time, but don't recall the reasons now.

2022 was because I had just bought the place in Vero and needed to get it livable plus get my condo ready to sell. Last year I had 3 other people going. 1 M-F couple and 1 guy. I had a 2 bedroom house reserved about a mile from the start point of the ride. First, the couple had to cancel. That doubled the cost per person so the guy cancelled shortly after. I did not want to foot the entire bill myself so I cancelled the reservation. Fortunately they gave me enough notice so I did not have to pay a cancellation fee.

Things are starting to look better. This system is forecast to move pretty fast. By the time I am scheduled to pass through Louisiana, it should be downgraded to a tropical depression and be at the Northwest border of Mississippi. So as long as there is no damage or flooding , i may be ok. As is often the case, the weather after the storm passes looks really nice.
