I think it is a beard when it has got long enough to be past that itchy stage.

I've had a beard for 10 months now. I keep it trimmed short, past stubble, but not what some would consider beard length. I clip it about twice a week and get it trimmed professionally once every 6 weeks. It is very gray, more so than the hair on my head, full head of hair, but who cares, it's part of being me.
