Doctor Who 2026

Return to Discussions

The BBC has cancelled the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas Special. It seems like the BBC is taking a break from the franchise.

I hope they figure something out and get it back on the air in 2027.

RE:Doctor Who 2026

Thanks for the update and sorry for the slow response.

Dr. Who really has been a mess in recent years and the BBC (and Disney) noticed. Fans were pulling away for many different reasons but I'd say it was largely because the shows themselves were very unsatisfying to watch. The scripts just weren't that good, not compared to what they had been in their best periods.

What Russel T. Davies did with Christopher Eccleston in the reboot from the original, old series, was remarkable, and that carried through beautifully under David Tennant and Matt Smith. He made it fresh, new and viable to a modern, global audience. I loved Peter Capaldi but felt at that point the scripts were starting to not be as strong. , and what happened with the stories under Chris Chibnall and the last version under Russel Davis was just...not good Doctor Who. And I really liked some of the actors chosen to play the Doctor and thought they had real potential, but like a Bond movie, the actors are only as good as the scripts they are given, and the writing has just been either mediocre or just plain bad.

Maybe it is time to give it a good rest until someone else with a good vision and a strong fan sensibility for what makes a good "Doctor Who" series, can come along and take the helm.
