Missed the chilly bullet
Return to DiscussionsIt was a close call last night, with me seriously considering planting tomatoes and hot peppers this past weekend. I held off because the mid-forties were forecast and it ended up going down to 39 early this morning, yikes! Let's hear it for avoiding that chill. Tomorrow's the day for those activities here in Virginia's tidewater! Twenty-one tomatoes and a few spicy peppers, basil, all brought up from seed and overflowing the barn with all that greenness -- that'll just about fill the beds for the year, along with my naked gardening gal burying a bunch of green bean seeds in the next few days.
Anyone else finding challenges in the garden this year? It's got to do better than last year's abysmal showing, doesn't it?
Hey naked Papa!
I got my tomatoes and herbs all planted last week. Thankfully we haven't gotten too cold here at night. Im getting the rest of my raised beds ready to get my peppers, cucumbers, squash, green beans, and potatoes in the dirt. Im going to expand my herb garden as well to double the amount of each I have planted.
An ambitious undertaking all that, so good times! I do feel some envy over all that space you all have to play in the dirt. I still haven't gotten the veggies in due to some kind of bug hitting me, maybe allergies but the doc isn't sure. Regardless, the garden show must go on ~
The littlest one picked up some sinus crud when we were at the resort last time, starting having symptoms monday. Friday I woke up with a sore throat and felt rough over the weekend. Feeling a lot better today thankfully. We have actually been getting some rain here, so I haven't missed any time in the garden and the plants need the rain.
Started planting our frost sensitive plants. We have a few in, including about half of our 50, or so, pepper plants. We were about to put in our tomato plants, which are busting out of their pots, when the forecast came up with 32 as a low Tuesday morning. Its been almost 90. I hope that predicted low inches up some over the weekend.
I've had several things in for over a month ... I had hoped the cold was over but got ambushed by a visiting cold front. I had put in cucumbers, squash, and a potato experiment. Most survived although all were stunted and are slowly recovering. My potted veggies are doing quite well with one tomato plant already at 5' with lots of flowers. We'll see how they do.
