I've heard that the bamboo grows like crazy and is hard to get rid of. Good Luck! Pete
I saw on the box once, where they dug a trench round it, and sunk a plastic barrier to about 18 inches, toforce the runners up and stop it spreading too far out.

I was worried about the bamboo taking over the neighborhood and even though I read about the barrier for the bamboo I decided to be safe and not make a forest, when my leyland cypress mature I will have a great barrier to go with my neighbors who also have leyland cypress so in some spot I will have double barrier, the best of both worlds.

I just hit on the idea of growing hops up the trellis I built on top of the fence. It should quickly help screen off next door and smell nice too. It has an added benefit, in as much as my Gran used to be a hop picker, (the hop field was right beside her cottage and we used to walk it often on the half hour walk across country to her cottage) I have a lot of childhood memories of the hop fields, so Dad and I went for a walk over there last night and pinched some of the runners from those very same hop plants that she used to pick, all those years ago.

this is the second set of leyland i have planted and the last set i planted about 15 years ago are about 15-18 ft high, in georgia leyland are very popular and since my yard is fairly large i think i'll be ok with the sun and when they are large enough i'll be able to go into the middle of yard nude to catch some sun rays.

yes or another good idea commonly used by many well known gardeners to stop plants from spreading & also to encourage them to grow tall is to just dig a hole & keep plants in the pots in the ground!! Works well with things like mint too!lol

There are many different kinds of bamboo, and all of them don't necessarily run wild. You can get clumping bamboos which confine themselves just like any other plant. But the runners can go amazing distances and do a lot of damage. I have used sections cut out of 55 gallon plastic barrels for containment among many other things. If you have a runner, and it is contained, the roots will usually run around the top edge of the containment and you just prune them off.
I have several dozen different bamboos here in my Japanese garden, and as long as you have a suitable climate for bamboo you can pretty much get one for any situation you might encounter.
I'm surrounded on all sides by nearby houses. But mine was the first one to be built. Every time another was built we planted a tall tree to block the view. Six houses and lots of treeslater my garden is so well screened I can be in it naked almost anywhere.
